Pathophysiology
Clinical meaning
Bronchiectasis is an irreversible dilation and destruction of the bronchial walls due to chronic infection and inflammation. Damaged airways lose their ability to clear mucus effectively, leading to pooling of secretions and recurrent infections. Patients produce large volumes of purulent sputum daily and experience progressive decline in lung function.
