Pathophysiology
Clinical meaning
Damaged or weakened venous valves allow blood to reflux and pool in the lower extremities. Sustained venous hypertension causes fluid transudation, hemosiderin deposition (brown staining), and chronic inflammatory changes that impair skin integrity and wound healing.

Risk factors:
- History of DVT
- Obesity
- Prolonged standing or sitting
- Pregnancy (multiple)
- Female sex
- Age >50 years
- Family history of venous disease
Diagnostics:
- Expect venous duplex ultrasound to assess valve function
- Monitor for hemosiderin staining
- Expect wound assessment for venous ulcers
- Monitor leg circumference for edema trends
- Expect albumin level if significant edema
