Cultural Considerations in Pediatric Care

Canada's pediatric patient population is among the most culturally diverse in the world. Nurses encounter families with different health beliefs, dietary practices, healing traditions, languages, gender roles, and relationships with the healthcare system — often shaped by historical trauma, immigration experiences, and systemic inequities. Cultural humility is the nursing standard — an ongoing commitment to self-reflection, acknowledging personal biases, and learning from each family encounter. It is not a static list of cultural facts to memorize, nor is it achieved once training is completed. Every family is unique, and assumptions based on cultural background can be as harmful as ignoring culture altogether.
