Ovulation is the release of a mature oocyte from the dominant Graafian follicle and the pivotal event that divides the follicular phase from the luteal phase.
Ovulation is the release of a mature oocyte from the dominant Graafian follicle and the pivotal event that divides the follicular phase from the luteal phase. It is triggered by the LH surge and occurs approximately 36 hours after the surge begins (and within about 10–12 hours of the LH peak). In a classic 28-day cycle ovulation falls on day 14, but because the follicular phase varies in length, ovulation can occur anywhere from roughly day 10 to day 21 in people with cycles of 24–35 days. The most accurate rule is that ovulation happens about 14 days before the next period, working backward from the fixed luteal phase. The trigger is elegant: sustained high estradiol from the mature follicle flips pituitary feedback from negative to positive, producing an abrupt LH surge. That surge resumes the oocyte's long-arrested meiosis, sets off a localized inflammatory and enzymatic process that weakens the follicle wall, and culminates in rupture and release of the egg, which the fimbriae sweep into the fallopian tube.
