Australia registration guide for internationally qualified registered nurses
Australia now has additional streamlined registration pathways for some internationally qualified registered nurses, while the existing IQNM assessment route remains in place for applicants who do not meet the newer registration-standard criteria.
The newer IQRN registration standard
The NMBA's General registration for internationally qualified registered nurses standard took effect on 23 April 2025. It is designed to streamline registration for eligible IQRNs with qualifications, registration, and practice histories that meet the standard's comparable-jurisdiction requirements. It does not replace the existing IQNM process for everyone.
Why your pathway depends on your registration history
NMBA guidance describes more than one eligibility pathway under the new standard. One route applies to nurses with relevant qualifications from approved comparable jurisdictions and sufficient recent practice. Another can apply to nurses who qualified elsewhere but later passed an accepted examination process, obtained general RN registration, and practised in an approved comparable jurisdiction. Always use the current NMBA eligibility material to determine whether either pathway applies to you.
If the streamlined standard does not apply
The existing internationally qualified nurse and midwife process remains relevant. Ahpra directs IQNMs to complete Self-check so their qualification information can be assessed and the next steps can be assigned. Completing assessment stages does not itself guarantee registration; applicants must still satisfy the applicable NMBA registration requirements.
When outcomes-based assessment may appear
In the existing IQNM process, some Stream B candidates may be required to complete outcomes-based assessment. Current Ahpra/NMBA guidance describes this as an MCQ examination plus an OSCE for the profession or division in which the applicant is seeking registration.
Registration is broader than the assessment pathway
Even when an applicant qualifies for a streamlined route, the NMBA's core registration standards still apply. These include areas such as English language skills, recency of practice, criminal history, professional indemnity insurance arrangements, and continuing professional development where applicable. Verify the current standards before submitting an application.
A practical way to plan your application
- Check whether you meet the current IQRN registration-standard eligibility rules.
- If not, follow Ahpra's current IQNM Self-check and assessment process.
- Keep qualification, registration, and practice-history evidence organised by jurisdiction and date.
- Track core registration standards separately from the qualification-assessment pathway.
- If an MCQ or OSCE is assigned, prepare for the exact assessment named in your official pathway rather than relying on another applicant's route.
