Introduction
Magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) is one of the most important โ and most potentially dangerous โ medications in obstetric care. It is used for: 1. Seizure prophylaxis in severe preeclampsia 2. Seizure treatment in eclampsia (active seizures) 3. Neuroprotection for the premature fetus <32 weeks at risk for cerebral palsy 4. Tocolysis (less common, see Module 1) Magnesium has a NARROW THERAPEUTIC WINDOW. The difference between a therapeutic dose and a toxic dose can result in respiratory arrest and cardiac arrest if not monitored. NCLEX consistently tests magnesium toxicity recognition and antidote administration โ mastering this topic is essential. Key fact: Magnesium sulfate does NOT lower blood pressure and is NOT an antihypertensive. It prevents and treats seizures. Hypertensive urgency in preeclampsia is treated separately with hydralazine, labetalol, or nifedipine (in non-tocolytic doses). On the exam, writers often pair stable-sounding options with unstable dataโnotice the mismatch before you commit. If the stem names a license or role, reread that line; scope errors are classic trap answers even when the clinical topic is familiar. Run a 60-second scan: breathing work and oxygenation,...
