The Vulva

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to: 1. Identify the structures of the vulva and relate their anatomy to protection, sensation, lubrication, urination, sexual function, and childbirth. 2. Distinguish expected vulvar findings from infection, inflammation, trauma, neoplasia, and differences of sex development across the lifespan. 3. Perform a systematic, consent-based external genital assessment and document findings precisely. 4. Explain why vulvar trauma can cause brisk bleeding, severe pain, rapidly expanding haematoma, or urinary retention. 5. Recognise findings that require urgent obstetric, neonatal, gynaecologic, endocrine, or oncologic escalation. 6. Apply Canadian prevention, treatment-safety, and trauma-informed principles to common vulvar conditions.
