Pathophysiology
Clinical Framing
NPs in primary care are the first to detect cancer. The challenge: cancer symptoms are often insidious and nonspecific. The risk of under-investigation must be balanced against anxiety-inducing over-investigation. Knowing which symptom combinations warrant expedited workup versus watchful waiting is a high-stakes NP judgment call. NICE NG12 cancer referral guidelines provide structure for this decision.
