Clinical Framing
Medications cause more hospital admissions in older adults than most individual diseases. The American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria is a validated, regularly updated list of medications that are potentially inappropriate in older adults (PIMs). NPs are uniquely positioned to deprescribe — often patients and other providers are reluctant to stop medications. Knowing WHAT to deprescribe, HOW to taper safely, and HOW to communicate the rationale to patients is essential clinical skill.
