Clinical meaning
Cultural awareness is the foundational recognition that cultural differences exist and influence health beliefs and behaviors. Cultural competence refers to acquiring knowledge and skills to work effectively across cultures, though it implies a finite endpoint. Cultural safety goes further by requiring healthcare providers to reflect on their own cultural identity and power, ensuring the care recipient defines whether the encounter was safe. In Canadian nursing practice, cultural safety is the standard expectation, recognizing that unsafe care can cause harm through discrimination, stereotyping, or failure to address systemic inequities.
