Control the Hazard Before It Reaches the Worker
A workplace hazard causes injury only when it reaches a person at a harmful dose.
A workplace hazard causes injury only when it reaches a person at a harmful dose. The safest response is therefore not to ask workers to be more careful around a danger; it is to remove or isolate the danger before exposure occurs. The hierarchy of controls ranks interventions from most to least effective: 1. Elimination: Remove the hazard entirely. Replacing a hazardous cleaning process with a nonchemical method eliminates chemical exposure. 2. Substitution: Use a less hazardous product or process. A safer disinfectant may reduce respiratory or skin injury risk. 3. Engineering controls: Physically separate the worker from the hazard. Examples include local exhaust ventilation, sealed medication-preparation systems, sharps safety devices, splash guards, and negative-pressure isolation rooms. 4. Administrative controls: Change how work is organized through training, staffing, procedures, scheduling, warning signs, or rotating workers away from a heat source. 5. Personal protective equipment (PPE): Gloves, gowns, respirators, face shields, and protective eyewear create a barrier between the worker and the hazard.
