A focused pelvic assessment is essential and may reveal cervical lesions, active bleeding, infection, or tenderness when clinically appropriate. It is also important to screen for conditions that could contribute to abnormal uterine bleeding, including known or suspected pregnancy, current or recurrent pelvic inflammatory disease, untreated lower-genital-tract infection, uterine-cavity distortion such as a large fibroid, uterine or cervical malignancy, progestin-dependent neoplasia including breast cancer, and active liver disease.
