Cerumenolytics, also called anticeruminolytics, are products used to soften and loosen excessive earwax so that the wax can be removed.
Cerumenolytics, also called anticeruminolytics, are products used to soften and loosen excessive earwax so that the wax can be removed. The current focal product is carbamide peroxide 6.5% otic solution, indicated for occasional use. Excessive or compacted cerumen can obstruct the external ear canal and interfere with hearing. A cerumenolytic changes the consistency of the wax; it does not treat an infected ear, repair a perforated tympanic membrane, or explain sudden or worsening hearing loss. That distinction prevents a common error: treating the symptom “blocked ear” without confirming that wax is the safest and most likely target. These agents sit at the boundary between routine care and avoidable harm. The product is appropriate only when the external canal and tympanic membrane are not showing warning signs that make drops unsafe.
