Fire Safety and Evacuation Roles

Fire changes the RPN's job from routine care to immediate life safety. Smoke, flame, or a burning odour is not a reason to finish a medication pass, collect a complete history, or wait for a provider order. The facility's written plan determines the alarm method, evacuation routes, designated shelter, communication channels, and each worker's assignment. The RPN follows that plan while protecting clients who cannot move independently. A safe response combines speed with scope: move people from immediate danger when it is safe, activate the alarm and notify the appropriate responders, assist evacuation, communicate client needs, and account for those moved. Fire suppression is not an assumed nursing duty.
