Clinical Judgment in Nursing Practice

Leadership is not limited to a formal title. At the bedside, an RPN leads whenever they recognize a change in condition, decide what carries the greatest risk, organize care, speak up for the client, and evaluate whether the plan worked. Clinical judgment is therefore more than completing assigned tasks. It connects client cues to a safe decision, then keeps the decision under review. The RPN must balance the client’s condition, current evidence, preferences, interprofessional input, available resources, and the limits of personal competence and regulatory authority.
