What Decongestants Actually Change
A decongestant relieves a blocked nose by stimulating alpha adrenergic receptors in the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa.
A decongestant relieves a blocked nose by stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors in the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa. The venous sinusoids and other capacitance vessels constrict, less blood remains in the swollen tissue, and mucosal oedema decreases. Airflow improves because the passage is less crowded—not because the drug has removed the cause of the congestion. That distinction guides safe nursing judgement. Decongestants do not kill respiratory pathogens, suppress the allergic process, or treat the inflammation of bacterial rhinosinusitis. They provide short-term symptom relief. Oral agents produce a systemic adrenergic effect; topical sprays act mainly where they are applied but can still cause systemic effects, especially with excessive or prolonged use. The expected response is easier nasal breathing. A patient who remains febrile, develops focal facial pain, or becomes increasingly unwell has not simply “needed another dose.”
