What this calculator does

The Pediatric TFI (total fluid intake) calculator totals a child's intake and expresses it as mL, mL/kg, and mL/kg/hr, with optional output for net balance and urine output mL/kg/hr. Pediatric fluid needs are weight-sensitive, so results are shown per kilogram.

This is a study tool for nursing education and exam preparation only. It must not be used to make real patient-care fluid decisions, and it does not recommend a fluid prescription.

Formulas

Weight: kg = lb ÷ 2.2. Total intake = sum of all entered sources. mL/kg = total intake ÷ weight (kg). mL/kg/hr = total intake ÷ weight (kg) ÷ hours. Urine mL/kg/hr = urine output ÷ weight (kg) ÷ hours. Net balance = intake − output.

Step-by-step example

A 10 kg child receives 400 mL total intake over 8 hours.

  1. mL/kg = 400 ÷ 10 = 40 mL/kg.
  2. mL/kg/hr = 400 ÷ 10 ÷ 8 = 5 mL/kg/hr.
  3. Interpret the number with assessment findings, urine output, and orders — the trend matters more than one value.

Common mistakes

  • Using pounds as kilograms without dividing by 2.2.
  • Reading one value in isolation instead of following the trend and clinical picture.
  • Forgetting the time period, which is required for any per-hour rate.

What does TFI mean in pediatrics?+

TFI stands for total fluid intake, the sum of all fluids a child receives over a period, often expressed per kilogram of body weight because pediatric fluid needs are weight-sensitive.

How do you calculate mL/kg/hr?+

Divide the total intake in millilitres by the weight in kilograms and then by the number of hours: mL/kg/hr = total intake ÷ weight (kg) ÷ hours.

How do you calculate pediatric urine output?+

Divide urine output in millilitres by the weight in kilograms and then by hours: urine mL/kg/hr = urine ÷ weight (kg) ÷ hours.

Why is weight important in pediatric fluid calculations?+

Children vary widely in size, so fluid intake and output are interpreted per kilogram. Convert pounds to kilograms first using kg = lb ÷ 2.2.
